About

About this tool

Readable copy converts better and keeps visitors on the page. This readability test scores your text with six established formulas: Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch–Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman–Liau and the Automated Readability Index (ARI), and shows the stats behind them, such as words per sentence and syllables per word.

Flesch Reading Ease runs from 0 to 100; higher is easier. For most websites, a score of 60 or more (plain English) and a grade level around 7–9 works well, while technical or academic audiences can handle more. The tool highlights sentences over 20 and 30 words, flags possible passive voice, and estimates reading and speaking time.

Everything runs in your browser as you type, so it's safe for unpublished drafts. Syllables are counted with an English heuristic, so scores can differ slightly from other checkers. Use the numbers as a guide, not a goal, and always read your copy aloud.
