Agentic commerce means AI agents shopping on a person's behalf: an assistant like Gemini or ChatGPT finds products, compares them and, increasingly, checks out. To get picked, your store needs accurate product data, structured data, clear prices and policies, fast pages, and AI crawlers allowed in. Adobe expects AI-driven retail traffic to rise 130% this holiday season.

Written on 1 November 2026. Every claim links to the company announcement or news report it comes from.

At TechTipsTool we build online stores and run AI search programmes for clients in India, the US and the Gulf. Over the past year the most common question from store owners has changed from "how do I rank on Google?" to "why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?" The answer is usually the same: the AI could not read the store's product data clearly enough to trust it.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping done partly or fully by AI agents. Instead of a person searching, clicking through ten tabs and filling in a checkout form, they ask an assistant something like "find a waterproof hiking jacket under ₹8,000 that can arrive before Friday". The agent searches, compares prices, reviews and delivery times, and either recommends a product or, where it is allowed, completes the purchase.

It is no longer a demo. Adobe's 2026 holiday forecast expects AI-driven traffic to US retail sites to rise 130% year on year this season. In Adobe's survey, 77% of people who have used AI for online shopping said it made them feel more confident in their purchase, and 69% said they were less likely to return the item.

How do AI shopping agents decide what to buy?

AI agents do not see your banners or your brand video. They read data. From what we see across client stores, an agent's choice depends on four things:

  1. Structured product data: name, brand, price, sale price, currency, stock, variants, shipping time and return window, in a format machines can read.
  2. Trust signals: reviews, ratings, a clear returns policy and consistent business details across the web.
  3. Access: whether the agent's crawler can reach your pages at all. Many stores block AI bots by accident through security or CDN settings.
  4. Fit: whether your product page clearly answers the shopper's constraints, such as size, budget, delivery date or materials.

If any of these is missing or contradictory, the agent picks a store where the data is clean.

Which agentic commerce protocols matter in 2026?

Several open standards now connect AI agents to stores. You don't need to implement them yourself, because your platform (Shopify, WooCommerce and others) increasingly does that, but it helps to know who backs what.

Protocol Backed by What it does Status in 2026
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) Google, with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart Connects agents to stores from discovery to checkout and support Announced January 2026; checkout in AI Mode and Gemini for US retailers
Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) OpenAI Lets ChatGPT find and present products from merchants OpenAI now uses it mainly for product discovery
Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) Google and partners Lets agents pay within limits a user sets Works alongside UCP
Model Context Protocol (MCP) Open standard used across AI tools Lets agents use tools and data sources, including store systems Widely supported by agent platforms

Two updates show how fast this is moving:

  • Google launched UCP at the NRF retail conference on 11 January 2026, TechCrunch reported. Shoppers can check out from US-based retailers inside AI Mode in Search and the Gemini apps, paying with Google Pay. Google also added new Merchant Center attributes to help products appear in AI search, and a branded "Business Agent" that retailers such as Lowe's and Reebok already use.
  • OpenAI pulled back from in-chat checkout. In March 2026 OpenAI said it would deprioritise Instant Checkout as a stand-alone feature and focus on product discovery, letting merchants use their own checkout, according to TechCrunch. Merchants can still offer deeper experiences through apps inside ChatGPT. In October 2026 ChatGPT added virtual try-on for clothes.

My reading: discovery inside AI assistants is here to stay, but checkout is still settling. Optimise for being found and recommended first. Let your platform handle checkout integrations as they mature.

How do you make your store ready for AI shopping agents?

These are the changes we make on client stores, in order of impact.

1. Let AI crawlers in

Check that AI assistants' crawlers are allowed in your robots.txt and are not blocked by your firewall or CDN. Our free AI crawler checker tests your site against the main AI and search bots in a few seconds.

2. Add complete Product and Offer structured data

Every product page should include Product and Offer schema with price, currency, availability, brand, SKU or GTIN, reviews and shipping or return details where you have them. Our schema generator helps you build and check it. This is the single biggest fix for most stores we audit.

3. Keep your Merchant Center feed accurate

Google's agents rely heavily on Merchant Center data. Make sure prices, sale prices and stock match your site exactly, and fill in the newer attributes Google added for AI search. A price mismatch between your feed and your page is a fast way to be dropped.

4. Answer shoppers' questions on the product page

Agents match products to constraints. Spell out sizes, materials, compatibility, delivery times to major cities, and what is in the box. A short FAQ on each important product page helps both shoppers and AI.

5. Make policies and business details easy to find

Publish clear shipping, returns and refund pages, and keep your business name, address and contact details the same everywhere. If yours need work, our refund policy generator is a quick start.

6. Keep pages fast and stable

Agents fetch pages quickly and give up on slow or broken ones. Fix 404s on best-sellers and keep your key pages fast on mobile. With the holiday rush coming, our Black Friday website checklist covers this step by step.

Agentic commerce readiness checklist

  • AI crawlers allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by your firewall or CDN
  • Product and Offer structured data on every product page
  • Merchant Center feed matches your site's prices and stock exactly
  • Each key product answers size, material, delivery and returns questions
  • Shipping, returns and contact pages are clear and linked from every product
  • Reviews visible on product pages
  • Best-selling product pages load fast on mobile and return no errors

What does agentic commerce mean for Indian online stores?

Most agentic checkout features, including Google's checkout in AI Mode, launched for US retailers first. That doesn't mean Indian stores should wait. Indian shoppers already use ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI results to research products, and discovery is where the advantage builds. Structured data, accurate feeds and clear policies help you appear in AI answers today, and they put you first in line when agentic checkout reaches India. If you also sell to the US, the opportunity is immediate.

What should you not do?

I would not recommend two common reactions:

  • Blocking all AI bots to "protect" your content. For a store, that usually means disappearing from the assistants your customers use. Block only bots you have a specific reason to block.
  • Rebuilding your store around one protocol. The standards are still shifting, as OpenAI's checkout change shows. Get your product data, structured data and policies right, and let your platform add protocol support as it matures.

The bottom line

Agentic commerce turns your product data into your shop window. Stores with clean, structured, accurate data and open access for AI crawlers will be the ones AI assistants recommend, and that matters more every month as AI traffic grows. Start with a free website audit to see where your store stands. If you want us to make your store AI-ready, our SEO, AEO and GEO service starts at ₹80,000 ($1,400) a month, or talk to us first.

FAQ

What is agentic commerce in simple terms?

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent does part or all of the work for you: finding products, comparing prices and reviews, and sometimes completing the purchase. The shopper sets the goal and limits, and the agent handles the steps.

What is an AI shopping assistant?

An AI shopping assistant is an AI tool, such as Gemini, ChatGPT or a retailer's own branded agent, that helps you find, compare and sometimes buy products through conversation instead of manual searching. Many retailers now offer their own assistant on their website as well.

What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?

The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is OpenAI's standard for connecting merchants' products to ChatGPT. Since March 2026, OpenAI has focused it on product discovery, while merchants can use their own checkout or build apps inside ChatGPT for deeper integration.

How do I get my products recommended by ChatGPT or Gemini?

Allow AI crawlers to reach your site, add complete Product and Offer structured data, keep your Google Merchant Center feed accurate, answer common questions on each product page, and make your returns and shipping policies easy to find. Reviews and consistent business details also build trust.

Is agentic commerce available in India?

AI-assisted product discovery already works in India through ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI results. Agentic checkout features such as Google's checkout in AI Mode launched for US retailers first, so Indian stores should focus on being discoverable now.

Do I need to build an AI agent for my store?

Not at first. Most stores get more value from making their existing product data and pages easy for other AI agents to read. A branded store agent can come later, once your data is clean and you know which questions customers ask most.
