About
About this tool
Salons pay stylists in one of two main ways: commission (the salon keeps a share of service revenue and covers products and overheads) or booth rental (the stylist pays a fixed weekly rent and keeps everything else). The better deal depends on how much the stylist brings in.
Enter the stylist's monthly service revenue, the commission split, product costs and weekly booth rent. The calculator compares both models from the stylist's and the owner's side, and finds the break-even revenue where renting starts to pay the stylist more.
Remember the non-financial differences: booth renters are usually self-employed, set their own hours and prices, and need their own licence and insurance where required.
